Comprehensive healthcare planning is an ongoing process in which patients, their loved ones, and their doctors discuss the patients’ goals and values, and how they affect the patients’ current and future medical care. This process includes the creation of formal documents, called advance directives, that contain patients’ medical care preferences. These documents include a living will or medical power of attorney, and act as a clear guide for a patient’s family and doctors.
