Dr. Greta McFarland Accepts Award from the Kansas Health Foundation

Ashley Clinic was one of six recipients of a Decade of Early Literacy Award presented at a recent Kansas Pediatric Foundation conference. The clinic received this distinction for 10 years’ participation in the Turn a Page. Touch a Mind ® (TAP-TAM) early literacy program.  Dr. Greta S. McFarland accepted the Decade of Early Literacy Award on behalf of the Ashley Clinic (picture at left). Presenting the award was Paul Nelson, MD, a retired pediatrician from Concordia who was instrumental in setting up the TAP-TAM program. Through TAP-TAM, children at more than 75 healthcare sites across Kansas receive an age-appropriate book to read together with their parents. With more than 375 physicians and medical providers encouraging early literacy in 35 Kansas communities, TAP-TAM has distributed more than 500,000 books since its inception in 2014.

As one of the oldest members of Turn a Page. Touch a Mind.® (TAP-TAM), Ashley Clinic, LLC in Chanute has distributed over 10,000 books to their patients 6 months through 5 years old at well-child visits since 2003. The 11 participating TAP-TAM providers (Marty Dillow, MD; David Guernsey, MD; Bruce Lee, DO; Amy Madril, MD, PhD; Greta McFarland, MD; Robert Thomen, MD; Mark Harms, PA; Tom Cloven, PA; Kathi Yokum, APRN; and Jill Frazell, APRN) have used books to build relationships with families, and share early literacy advice with parents at each well-child visit. "This program is great! When one of my little 15-month-old friends came in, his mother said 'It's about time for his new book! He really loved the last one, and there isn't much left of it!'" shared one of the Ashley Clinic, LLC physicians.

Ashley Clinic, LLC has also used TAP-TAM to reach out to the community through advertising their gently used book program and has received an outpouring of support. "I have families that take a book every time they visit, and I suspect that these are some of the only books that they own," said an Ashley Clinic physician.  Because of the success of their gently used book program, Ashley Clinic, LLC makes sure that siblings and sick kids can have a book when they come in, which takes the program to another level. Thank you for all of the work that you have done promoting early literacy in Chanute, Ashley Clinic!
